I woke up at 2:00am. The evening before, I opened the window and curtains and lay on my bed, struggling to focus all of my attention on homework. I never have trouble doing well on school, but I make it a habit to give my all, and the fairytales tugging at my mind made that difficult. They pulled me to the scene outside the window. There was a bat. In my house.
I screamed and called mom. “THERE IS A BAT IN THE HOUSE! IT’S IN THE HOUSE!!” She heard me loud over the phone, but she couldn’t tell what I was saying, so she thought someone might have broken in. I told her it was a bat and she told me to call dad. Some nights she works until late; she’s a magazine editor for Cooking Light. I ran to my room and slammed the door....
I was on a walk, following a leafy trail into a forest. I carried a leather bag at my side with sugar cakes and fresh strawberries. I passed a rabbit, hiding under a bush. Then I passed another, this one closer to the trail. Two squirrels raced up a tall Birchwood. They weren’t running away from me; one was chasing the other. Mushrooms dotted the ground under the trees. I stooped down and put some...
When I judge, I wait. Because I can’t see motives, I wait for what I can see: the product. Not everything that is spoken is truth, but you can’t hide the truth forever. Light is reality, and total darkness is only an eclipse that cannot last. So, the product is the manifestation of truth.

I sat behind the driver of the otherwise empty school bus, opening and closing my cell phone. I love that feeling when I turn on my cell phone, wait a few seconds, and feel it shake with the barrage of texts coming in after their long wait.
The driver pulled a cap over his gray hair. “Did you come from down there?” He motioned to the gym.
